Ruimte: Magistraat se kantoor
Setting: Magistrate's office
Benjamin sê sy maal-tafels, want hy dink die Magistraat gaan vra of hy geleerd is
Benjamin says his timetables because he thinks the Magistrate is going to ask if he is literate
Benjamin beplan om te ontsnap - hy wil deur die venster klim (enigste probleem is sy trommel)
Benjamin plans to escape - he wants to climb through the window (only problem is his trunk)
Benjamin is skaam en bang (shy and scared)
Die magistraat vra vir Benjamin vrae:
The magistrate asks Benjamin questions:
- Kry jy koud? (Hy bewe)
- Are you cold? (He's shaking)
- Het hy ‘n ander naam gehad toe jy klein was? 1
- Did he have another name when he was small?
- Kan hy iets onthou voor die Lange Kloof? 2
Can you remember anything before the Lange Kloof?
- Hy moet terugdink en alles se wat hy onthou 3
- He must think back and recall everything he remembers
Benjamin se vir die Magistraat hy is bang - hy kan nie dink as hy bang is nie
Benjamin tells the Magistrate he is scared - he can't think when he is scared
Die konstabel bring vier seuns om saam met Benjamin te staan – Barta moet hom uitken
The constable brings four boys to stand with Benjamin - Barta must identify him
Barta kom uit, dan Elias (verskrik - interessant?)
Barta comes out, then Elias (scared - interesting?)
Barta wys met haar vinger na Benjamin (uitken)
Barta indicates to Benjamin with her finger (identify)
Sy draai om en begin huil
(She turns around and starts crying)
Die magistraat vra of Benjamin begryp wat gebeur het
The magistrate asks if Benjamin understands what happened
Benjamin vra of hy nou huis toe kan gaan, is die bosvrou klaar gekyk
Benjamin asks if he can go home now, is the bush woman done looking
Die magistraat verduidelik dat hy die kind is wat weggeraak het jare gelede in die Bos
The magistrate explains that the child is the one that went missing years ago in the Bush
Hy wou eers seker maak deur die bosvrou te vra om hom uit te ken
He wanted to make sure first by asking the bush woman to identify him
Sy het hom sonder twyfel uitgeken
She identified him without any doubt
Hy se dit sal vreemd wees vir hom aan die begin, maar dis sy eie mense (rassisties)
He says it will be strange in the beginning, but these are his own people (rassist)
Benjamin dring aan hy is Fiela Komoetie se hanskind - die Here het hom aan haar toebetrou
Benjamin insists that he is Fiela Komoetie's adopted child - God entrusted him to her
Benjamin noem die magistraat Baas vir die eerste keer - hy mag dit nooit weer se nie, hy is 'n wit kind en moet soos een praat
Benjamin calls the magistrate Boss for the first time - he says he may never say that again, he is a white child and must speak like one
Baas is 'n aanspreekvorm vir iemand bo jou/in 'n posisie van gesag - tegnies gepas
Boss is a form of address for someone who is above you/in a position of authority - technically it is appropriate

Ruimte: Bos, Boshuis
Setting: Bush, Bush house
Benjamin is nou Lukas
Benjamin is now Lukas
Elias dra Lukas se trommel
Elias carries Lukas's trunk
Barta vra of Lukas moeg is – sy gee om vir hom
Barta says Lukas is possibly tired - she cares for him
Elias ruk hom aan die arm, se hy het 'n mooi hemp en vra wat in sy trommel is (hy is skelm)
Elias pulls at his arm, says he is wearing a nice shirt and asks what's in his trunk (he's a crook)
Hy antwoord astrant - dis sy goed
He answers cheekily - it's his stuff
Barta vra hoekom die kind sonder tong is (Elias se hy's vreemd)
Barta asks why he's not speaking (Elias says he's shy - not strange)
Barta se die kind is mooi, bietjie te maer soos Nina (suster)
Barta says he is good looking, maybe a little too thin like Nina (sister)
Lukas weier om by hulle te kom sit - hulle maak sy trommel oop en eet sy kos
Lukas refuses to sit with them - they open his trunk and eat his food
Hulle kom by die boshuis aan – die kinders vat aan Lukas en hy skop hulle
They arrive at the bush house - the children touch Lukas and he kicks them
Tant Gertjie se hulle moet hom los - hy's bang en gedaan (moeg), later se sy verwilder
Tant Gertjie says they must leave him - he's scared and exhausted, then later she calls him rattled
Hy sit op die hoek van die huis op sy hurke - buitestanderskap - hy kruip weg
He sits on the corner of the house on his haunches - he's an outsider - he's hiding
Nina vra of hy 'n patat soek
Nina asks if he wants a sweet potato
Sy vra vir hom of hy 'n geheim kan hou
She asks if he can keep a secret
Nina wil hom Bos toe neem om die geheim te gaan wys
Nina wants to take him to the bush to show him a secret
Hy se hy wag vir sy ma - dring aan sy is op pad
He says no, he's waiting for his mom - insists she's on her way
Sy se hy moet sy nukke stop - Pa sal hom kortvat (uitdrukking)
She says he must stop his moodiness - his dad will sort him out (expression)
Hy noem haar Meisiekind
He calls her girl (informal)
Nina sê sy weet hoe om by Diepwalle se pad (hardepad) na die Lange Kloof te kom – sy sê die geheim is op pad soontoe (hy vra of sy hom sal vat) - hulle kan na Kom-se-bos se sleeppad hardloop
Nina says she knows how to get to the Diepwalle's road (hard road) to the Lange Kloof - she says the secret is on the way there (he asks if she'll take him) - they can run to Kom-se-bos' road
Lukas is bang dat die olifante hulle gaan jaag - Nina se kies net 'n dik boom
Lukas is scared the elephants will chase them - Nina says choose a thick tree
Lukas op band (eksterne vertelling): hy het haar nie vertrou nie, sy het sy slaaphemp as ‘n rok gedra, dit was te groot vir haar en het onder haar kniee gehang, sy was baie vinnig
Lukas on tape (external narration): he did not trust her, she was wearing a sleeping shirt as a dress, it was too big for her, she was very fast
Sy vat hom na die bosspruit toe, se waar om te trap (kennis van die bos)
She takes him to the bush spring, says where he must step (knowledge of the bush)
Sy val en raak vol modder, die slaaphemp is vuil
She falls and is full of mud, the sleep shirt is dirty
Sy kruip weg en hy raak bang
She hides and he becomes scared
Nina se Fiela kan nie sy ma wees nie
1. Sy is bruin
2. Barta het hom dadelik uitgeken
Nina says Fiela can't be his mother

2. Barta identified him immediately
Hy se hy wil teruggaan, sy hardloop weg en kruip weg
He says he wants to go back, she runs away and hides
Hy is benoud en sy kom terug - sy lag vir hom
He is anxious and she comes back - she laughs at him
Nina het vier leë bottels begrawe en was hulle in die stroompie
Nina buried four empty bottles and washes them in the stream
- die soetoliebottel en twee blou bottels het sy opgetel
- the sweet oil bottle and two bottles she picked up
- die kraffie het sy by tannie Gertjie gesteel
- the craffie she stole from aunt Gertjie
Die bottels maak klank – die kraffie s’n is die mooiste
The bottles make a sound - the craffie's one is the prettiest
Hy sal haar vyf sjielings (‘n halfkroon) betaal as sy hom wys hoe om uit die Bos te kom
He offers to pay her five sjielings (a half crown - currency) to show him how to escape the Bush
Sy wil ‘n mondfluitjie en ‘n kombers koop – die grootvoete het haar kombers vertrap toe Pa vir hulle weggehardloop het
She wants to buy a harmonica and a blanket - the elephants trampled hers when her father was running away from them
Nina sê jy mag nie “Grootvoete” hardop sê nie, want dan hoor hulle jou, dink jy roep hulle en jaag jou - bygeloof
Nina says he may not say "Grootvoete" out loud, because they hear you, think you call them and chase you - superstition
Elias vra of Barta nie die patats uit die as moet haal nie (hy is lui)
Elias asks if Barta doesn't want to take the sweet potatoes out (he is lazy)
Barta se Elias mag nie aan Lukas slaan nie - hy slaan met osrieme, hard, laat merke
Barta says Elias may not hit Lukas - he hits with osrieme, hard, leaves marks
Die magistraat sal iemand stuur om te kom kyk of Lukas oukei is
The magistrate will send someone to see if Lukas is okay
Elias noem Fiela-hulle die "bruingoed" - rassisties
Elias calls Fiela and them the "brown things" - racist
Nina is tuis in die Bos - jy kan haar nie daaruit hou nie - hardloop weg, wil nie werk nie
Nina is at home in the bush - you can't keep her out of it - runs away, doesn't want to work
Elias calls Nina and Lukas "maaksels" - net iets wat hy kan gebruik
Elias calls Nina and Lukas "things I make" - just something he can use
Hulle moet bylkap en balke maak
The must chop with axes and make beams
Nina sê Lukas het weggeloop Diepwalle se kant toe en sy het hom gaan soek (eerste leuen)
Nina says Lukas ran away towards the Diepwalle side and she went to look for him(first lie)
Sy se hy wou nie omdraai nie, sy het hom probeer ompraat (tweede leuen)
She says he didn't want to come back, she tried talking him out of it (second lie)
Die laaste keer wat sy hom gesien het was in Kom-se-bos
The last time she saw him was in Kom-se-bos
Sy se hy het die pad self geken (derde leuen)
She says he knew the way himself (third lie)
Dit was donker toe hulle hom gebring het, Elias glo nie hy ken die pad nie - IRONIES - hy het geglo 'n kind van 3 kon dieselfde pad loop
It was dark when they brought him, Elias doesn't believe he knew the way - ironic - he believed a child of 3 could walk the same way
Elias gaan soek vir Lukas met 'n baadjie en lantern
Elias goes and looks for Lukas with a jacket and lantern

Ruimte: Knysna
Setting: Knysna
Fiela is by die magistraat se kantoor - Mister Goldsbury
Fiela is at the magistrate's office
Sy het twee dae geloop tot daar
It took her two days to walk there
Fiela noem die heeltyd die stelling "seil soos 'n slang" - bly nederig
Fiela often mentions the statement "sail like a snake" - stay humble
Fiela se as jy voor 'n wit mens verlee staan, moet jy laag buig
If you stand in front of a white person embarassed or unsure, you need to bend low
Sy gesels met ‘n skoonmaker (hy is 'n bruin man)
She chats to a cleaner (he is a brown man)
Die magistraat is nie daar nie; hy is in die hof
The magistrate is not there; he is in court
Die skoonmaker bring die konstabel – hy sê Fiela wil ‘n klag lê
The cleaner brings the constable - he says Fiela wants to submit a complaint
Fiela is gelowig - sy dank die Here "Dank die liewe vadertjie"
Fiela has faith in God - she thanks him
Konstabel kom op die toneel
Constable comes onto the scene
Die skoonmaker se sy wil n klag le teen die magistraat (onwaar)
The cleaner says she wants to submit a complaint against the magistrate (not true)
Die magistraat se die saak is afgehandel - Benjamin is by sy regte ouers
The magistrate says the matter is dealt with - Benjamin is with his real parents
Fiela - ongeloof, verstaan nie
Fiela - disbelief, doesn't understand

Ruimte: Bos
Setting: Bush
Elias vind Lukas
Elias finds Lukas
Hy gooi ‘n osriem om sy skouers en trek hom vas
He throws a whip around his shoulders and pulls him in
Elias slaan hom tot hy sê hy is sy pa, Barta is sy ma, sy broers en susters is wie hulle is en hy is Lukas - hy is vol merke
Elias hit him until he says he is his dad, Barta is his mother, his brothers and he is Lukas - he is full of bruises
Nina glip buitentoe na die Bos, niemand sien haar nie en Elias slaan haar as hy haar kry
Nina slips away to the Bush, no one sees her and Elias hits her when he finds her
Nina skree en hardloop om die meubels, weg van Elias
Nina screams and runs around the furniture, away from Elias
Elias slaan vir Nina, Lukas hou sy hande oor sy ore
Elias hits Nina, Lukas holds his hands over his ears
Hy wil haar hare sny met ‘n skêr, maar dit knip nie (sy het 'n bos hare)
He tries to cut her hair with a scissors but it doesn't cut (she has bushy thick hair)
Hy sny haar hare met ‘n mes
He cuts her hair with a knife
Elias is wreed, gewelddadig, onredelik
Elias is cruel, violent, unreasonable

Ruimte: Fiela se huis
Setting: Fiela's house
Fiela vra Selling of hy glo 'n kind van 3 kon daardie reis maak - hy se nee
Fiela asks Selling if he believes a child of 3 could make that journey - he says no
Kittie soek in die Bybel (iewers in Konings): die gelykenis van die 2 ma's wat gestry het oor 'n kind (wie is sy ma)
Kittie searches in the Bible (somewhere in the book Kings): the parable (moral story) of the 2 mothers who fought over a child (who his mother is)
Selling sê Petrus Zondagh kan uitvind waar die kind is
Selling says Petrus Zondagh can find out where the child is
Fiela wil self uitvind
Fiela wants to find out herself
Toneel 6
Ruimte: Magistraatkantore
Setting: Magistrate's office
Fiela klop aan die magistraat se deur (tweede besoek)
Fiela knocks on the magistrate's door (second visit)
Sy noem die magistraat Salomo - interteks - koning in die Bybel
She calls the magistrate Solomon - interteks - king in the Bible
Sy wil weet hoekom sy nie in die hof kon wees nie - hoekom net Barta
Sy wants to know why she couldn't be in court - why just Barta
In die Bybelstorie was dit anders - albei vrouens was daar
In the Bible story it was different - both women were there
Fiela noem Benjamin haar grootmaakkind (twee naam, eerste: hanskind)
Fiela calls Benjamin the child she raised
Fiela sê dis onmoontlik vir ‘n kind van 3 om die roete oor die berg te maak
Fiela says it's impossible for a child of 3 to make the way over the mountain
Die magistraat sê die bosvrou het ‘n getuie gehad - Fiela se dit kon toevallig wees
The magistrate says the bush woman had a witness - Fiela says it could be a coincidence
Fiela sê Barta moet sê watter klere die kind aan gehad het toe hy weggeraak het
Fiela says Barta says what clothes the child was wearing when he went missing
Fiela het nie meer die klere nie - 'n kriekplaag in die Kloof het dit gevreet (eerlike vrou)
Fiela doesn't have the clothes anymore - a cricket plague in the Kloof ate it (honest woman)
Sy wil die Laghaans se huurgrond koop vir Lukas - sy sal selfs vir die Magistraat volstruiskuikens bring
She wants to buy the Laghaans' rental farm for Lukas - she will even bring some ostrich chicks for the magistrate
Sy rig een versoek: hy moet se waar die kind is
Sy requests one thing - he must say where the child is
Die magistraat verbied/belet Fiela om naby die kind te kom
The magistrate forbids Fiela to come near the child
Hy gaan die magistraat (mister Cairncross) in Uniondale in kennis stel
He will notify the magistrate (mister Cairncross) in Uniondale
Fiela voel magteloos
She feels deflated/without any hope or power

Ruimte: Boshuis
Setting: Bush house
Boswagter Kapp vra of die kind tevrede is - vraag 1
Bush ranger Kapp asks if the child is satisfied
Hy vra of die kind goed aanpas (die magistraat het hom gestuur) - vraag 2
He asks if the child is adjusting well (the magistrate sent him)
Hy vra of die kind baie vra oor Fiela-hulle - vraag 3
Elias vra hoekom hy nie tevrede sal wees nie (hy jok) / Barta se hy's tevrede en gesond, maar hy’t aan die begin veral in die nag gevra om huis toe te gaan
Elias asks why he would not be satisfied (lying) / Barta says he's satisfied and healthy but in the beginning, especially at night, asked to go home
Elias se Barta is daagliks aangedaan (emosioneel) dat die kind terug is, sy is bang dis dalk nie waar nie (leidraad)
Elias says Barta gets emotional daily, knowing the child is back, she is scared it might not be true (clue)
Lukas kan lees en skryf en moet vir Nina leer (haar kop is nie stomp nie) – hy is meer geleerd as die Van Rooyen kinders
Lukas can read and write and must teach Nina (she is clever) - he is more literate than the Van Rooyen children
Een van die groot redes hoekom hy nie by Fiela kon agterbly, was dat hy nie van die Here leer of skoolwerk nie - ironies doen Elias en Barta dit nog minder
One of the biggest issues regarding whether he could stay with Fiela, was that she wasn't teaching him about God or education - ironically Barta and Elias does even less
Elias vra die boswagter om te luister vir Nina vir n “kinderwagter” werk in die dorp
Elias asks the ranger to keep his ears open for a babysitting job for Nina in town
Lukas bid – Nina verstaan dit nie en vra of sy maag pyn – die Komoetie kinders is ook meer geestelik as die Van Rooyens
Lukas prays - Nina doesn't understand and if he has a stomach ache - the Komoetie children is also more spiritual than the Van Rooyen
Fiela het Lukas se goed (met n dasvelkombers - simbool van troos - Nina probeer dit vat) gebring - Elias wou die honde agter haar aansit (hy kyk neer op haar)
Fiela brought Lukas' stuff (with a dasvel blanket - symbol of comfort - Nina tries to take it) - Elias wants to send the dogs after her (he looks down on her)
Sy het 'n seun by haar gehad - hulle spesifiseer nie wie dit is nie, maar noem hom 'n opgeskote seun
She had a boy with her - they don't specify who he is, but calls him an adolescent
