Digte mis – iets word bedek – wys op gevaar, skep spanning, moeiliker vir ‘n kind om weg te raak
Thick mist – something is being hidden – shows danger, creates tension, easier for a child to go missing
Die kinders is gereeld siek – die huis is nat en kort herstelwerk
The children are frequently sick – the house is wet and needs repairs
Elias is lui – hy maak of hy werk as Barta kom (gryp die handbyl) – hy maak balke vir ‘n lewe
Elias is lazy – he pretends to work when Barta arrives (grabs the hand axe) – he makes beams for a living
Lukas is weg – Barta is bekommerd “druk ‘n vuis in haar mond”
Lukas is missing – Barta is worried “presses her first in her mouth”
Elias sê die kind is iewers in iemand se huis
Elias says the child is somewhere in someone’s house

Setting: Lange Kloof, Fiela’s house

Die kinders jaag die volstruismannetjie kamp toe – Benjamin moet after draf – Selling sê “hy’s nie een vir agter draf nie” (simbolies)
The children chase the male ostrich to the camp – Benjamin must run at the back – Selling says “he’s not one for running at the back”
Selling sê ‘n vreemde perdekar ry heel week in die Kloof
Selling says a strange horse drawn carriage has been driving around in the Kloof all week
Fiela dink dit is smouse – sy sê hulle werk direk met Rossinski – hulle mag net dasvelle koop (vir 2 oulap ‘n vel)
Fiela thinks it is hawkers – she says they work directly with Rossinski – they may only buy dassie skins (for 2 oulap per skin)
Selling brei die velle, maak karwatse en swepe en skoene – die “swakte het hom ingeneem”

Die Lange Kloof is droog en warm, in sterk kontras met die Bos (daar is aalweë en baie stof, volstruise)

Ruimte: Bos, in die huis
Setting: Bush, in the house

Elias het die olifante dae lank ingewag
Elias waited for the elephants for days
Hy het die boom gekap sodat as hulle daarop druk, hulle by die afgrond sou afval
He chopped the tree in such a way that when the elephants leaned on it, they would fall off the cliff
Hy soek die ivoor (dik, geelwit tande) van die olifante om te verkoop
He wants ivory (think, yellow white teeth) of the elephants to sell
Drie olifante het hom gejaag – hy moes die handbyl, kortsaag, osrieme, kombers (Nina s’n) agterlaat
Three elephants chased him – he had to leave the hand axe, short saw, whip from oxtail, blanket (Nina’s)
Elias lê en herstel in die son as die Boswagter kom
Elias lays down and recovers in the son when the Bush Ranger comes
Barta is bang vir die uil op die afdak – sy is bygelowig – sy glo dit bring ongeluk
Barta is scared of the owl on the awning – she is superstitious – she believes it brings misfortune
Die Magistraat stuur ‘n boodskap: die Boswagter sê daar is ‘n groot moontlikheid dat Lukas gevind is
The Magistrate sends a message: the Bush Ranger says there is a possibility that Lukas was found

Ruimte: Fiela se huis
Setting: Fiela’s house

Die aalwee tap nie, as gevolg van die Noordwestewind
The aloe doesn’t give juice because of the North Western wind
Fiela maak seep vir Miss Baby en antie Maria – dit het nie reg uitgekom nie (Benjamin het geroei in die seeppot, nie geroer nie)
Fiela makes soap for Miss Baby and aunty Maria – it didn’t come out right (Benjamin rowed in the soap pot instead of stirring it)
Hulle gaan Pollie by Skopper injaag
They are going to put Pollie and Skopper together
Tollie moet in die huis bly oor sy been
Tollie has to stay inside because of his leg
Lange en Dikke verskyn (Woensdag) – Mister Goldsbury (nuwe Magistraat op Knysna) het hulle gestuur
Lange and Dikke appears (Wednesday) – Mister Goldsburg (new magistrate in Knysna) sent them
Die magistraat wil Benjamin Vrydag op Knysna sien – Barta moet hom kom uitken
The magistrate wants to see Benjamin in Knysna on Friday – Barta must identify him
Fiela wil hom self vat – dit sal twee dae te voet neem – sy stel voor hulle gaan Maandag
Fiela wants to take him herself – it will take two days by foot – she suggests they go on Monday
